Much the same as the most forceful cataclysmic events, for example, torrents, tremors, and volcanic emissions, wars can end the lives of a huge number of blameless individuals in only a snap. Each one of those heartless shelling, stunning shootouts, and harsh medications among battling countries are slaughtering the world in such more terrible manners than catastrophic events. This makes war as one of the most loathed, despised, and dreaded ideas. Nonetheless, it has likewise gotten one of the most handled subjects and topics in writing, permitting the individuals who never experienced it to see a brief look at its inclination and reality. In James William Gibsonââ¬â¢s article, Warrior Dreams, he discusses the sentiment of being ââ¬Å"unnamedâ⬠by a war that never got triumphant. Notwithstanding difficulties and deterrents, this man who has been debilitated by the battle appears to have framed hallucinations of powerful warrior saints like Rambo, Dirty Harry and Jack Ryan (Gibson 625). A normal and ordinary man would see totally that the truth of being unmanned can be contrasted with an upsetting circumstance in a manââ¬â¢s life where his most noteworthy common capacity and quality are removed: ââ¬Å"Feeling unmanned by a war lost and by the reworking of sex codes in the wake of the sexual transformation, a large number of American men [â⬠¦] started to dream, to fantasize about the forces and highlights of another sort of man who could retake and reorder the worldâ⬠(Gibson 625). This would definitely leave that individual frail in his own mindfulness and conviction; in this way, he will require something or someoneââ¬even a fanciful heroââ¬from whom he can pick up quality and a motivation of strength. This, Gibson notes, can be one of the most powerful underlying foundations of savage brutality and barbarism. In the same way as other scholarly specialists and sociologists who investigated wars and upheavals in their works, Gibson concedes that wars are for all intents and purposes normally happening occasions. He even cases that wars have divine narratives too â⬠that during the old social orders, even divine beings utilized wars as an approach to set up the worshipped request of things: ââ¬Å"These cosmogonic, or creation, legends place a vicious clash between the great powers of request and the insidious powers committed to the propagation of the early stage bedlam. After the war wherein the divine beings rout the shrewd ones, they build up the holy orderâ⬠(Gibson 633). This case, along with the greater part of the scholastic cases about wars, suggests that for the most part, wars are something which is intrinsic in the propensities of individuals and that war and viciousness gives off an impression of being endless show of intensity by the humansââ¬a power that they think they own. There are a ton of current issues and happenings that can be identified with Gibsonââ¬â¢s point of view on war and brutality. Beside the apparently ceaseless wars and fierce acts established in strict clashes and ideological conflicts, Gibsonââ¬â¢s conversation on the nature and truth of war and brutality can likewise be exemplified on account of a merciless shooting in school done by simple juvenile young men shook the whole country â⬠a bad dream that they never envisioned to ever happen. It was an ideal spring morning in the fields of the Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. As the examination uncovered, the passings of 13 blameless individuals were to be sure done by two young men by the name of Eric Harris, 18 years old and Dylan Klebold, 17 (Bradley). The two began pressing their apparatus weapons and bombs in their duffel sacks on the morn of April 20, 1999. In the wake of setting up their weapons and god-comprehends what, they went to Columbine High School. It was past 11 toward the beginning of the day when the principal set of discharges were heard by the understudies from the cafeteria and they quickly hurried under the table to shield themselves from what they can't deny as risk. What followed next was a progression of inconsequential, merciless shooting and shelling by the two youthful shooters. The police were promptly present in the zone; nonetheless, they couldn't ensure the lives of 13 guiltless individuals who fell dead. After the shootings and shelling, when the police and the SWAT were at long last prepared to enter the grounds, the shooters, Harris and Klebold, took their own lives. This was only one of the most grisly and upsetting vicious acts the entire of America has seen throughout the years. Notwithstanding, what upset most Americans about this occurrence was the inclusion of two youngsters as the shooters themselves. After the episode, a great deal of brutal pundits passed the fault onto the media business for their flippant telecom and inadequate checking and control with the messages and substance they pass on. A great deal of guardians lamented as well as accused each conceivable medium which they think has added to the development of brutal materials in the broad communications industry and thusly influenced the conduct of youngsters. Be that as it may, even to this date, nobody can be actually sure about what went on in Harris and Klebolds brains to do something like this. In any case, considering Gibsonââ¬â¢s conversation on the nature and truth of wars and savagery, one could derive that these two young men simply had an inclination of intensity show in bogus knowing and understanding that they can control and change the request for the world. Throughout the mid year of 1935, Pauls life changed perpetually after detainee named, John Coffey was put under his watchman. John had forces to recuperate and restore individuals and creatures. He was waiting for capital punishment for a wrongdoing that he didn't submit, later gathering the man, Wild Bill, who was to blame for it. John uncovers his forces to Paul and the other jail officials, making John live longer then what he should on the grounds that he was given some of Johns powers. The film finishes by Paul compelling himself to execute John and living his days outlasting everybody accepting that God was rebuffing him for having John executed. All through The Green Mile I saw numerous issues that identify with what was found out in class, for example, capital punishment, carefulness, comparable cop stresses, redresses, provisional work framework, prize and discipline, and the madness resistance being utilized. During this film there were 3 hot seat executions. I got the opportunity to see the pressure it put on the officials and the detainees. The main man who got execution had a feeling of disappointment, needing to return to where he was the most glad. The U. S. Incomparable Court concluded that death penalty doesn't damage the eighth alterations restriction of remorseless and unordinary disciplines. In the wake of watching this film and seeing individuals hang tight to get execution and the planning is an amazingly barbarous discipline. Arrangement during an electric shock incorporates officials practicing the execution, the detainee seeing his/her family once and for all, shaving the highest point of the detainees hair, the prisoner having a selection of his/hers last supper, the detainee getting lashed and their face secured and their final words. A ton of this leads Paul into extraordinary pressure particularly when it was Johns turn for execution. This type of pressure is called Organizational pressure. During The Green Mile, I saw a great deal of tact between the officials and the prisoners. One of the prisoners was permitted to deal with a mouse in which he likely wasnt permitted to have in his cell as a pet. Some other time I saw circumspection was when Paul gave John chile cake. There was a great deal of tact between the officials since when an official utilized brutality towards one of the prisoners, different officials didnt go to a more significant position authority. Rather they managed the circumstance between themselves. Prize and discipline was likewise utilized during the film on a detainee named Wild Bill. He was being insane raising a ruckus between different prisoners and the officials. They put him into a Padded cell in a restraint as discipline. In the wake of doing this multiple times they utilized not going into the cushioned cell with a restraint as a prize for acting great. At long last, I saw redresses and a provisional work framework during the film. During the main scene they indicated detainees in a line doing work. They were encircled with a lot of officials with huge firearms. The detainees were singing tunes which made me consider subjection. The prisoners are compelled to work for enough nourishment and garments to endure simply like during bondage. I thought this was out of line to treat detainees like that particularly since a large portion of the prisoners in jail are in there for self-hurt violations. Answer: The essay focuses on the two aspects of journalism. The essay will describe two chapters of journalism along with the examples from realities. Both the implication of theoretical framework in the real life media are described in the essay. Different concepts about the origin of journalism to the modern use of journalism are explained in a detailed manner. In the chapter 1 of the book, journalism is defined for the citizens of the country and for the democracy of the country. However, the purpose of journalism is providing information to the citizens of the country while they are self-governing and free. Author in the first chapter has stated that in the 17th century, journalism has emerged (Lasorsa, Lewis, and Holton 21). At that time, journalism did not attempt all categories of people. Later in America, journalism had spread in pubs, coffee houses, pubs and in political houses. There are two theories of journalism such as journalists theory of Democracy and theory of Interlocking public. In the electronic age, the theory of interlocking public is followed i.e. reaction of public is more important on the content of the news that is being posted in the media (Kovach and Rosenstiel 24). For instance, New York Times is a popular newspaper that deals into all categories of news that attracts people on reading it. On the other hand, it al so focuses on the reaction of the readers of the paper. The post of the attack of Bin Laden on the World Trade Center is a sensitive issue that will blow the minds of the readers of the topic (Friend and Jane 35). Third chapter of the book describes about the proper audiences of the journalists. The journalists have to think for the public first i.e. the loyalty of the citizens then towards another commitment. Many issues are regularly occurred in the world of media and journalism. The public thought that journalists usually exaggerate things in the media. Certain instances are responsible for the creation of this illusion in the minds of the audiences. Many journalists have concentrated on the news content irrespective of the consent of the citizens (Kovach and Rosenstiel 73). It will not work until the citizens are not highlighted. Hence the owner of the companies nowadays are committed to the citizens first and are hiring managers who will put the general mass as the first priority. Clear standards have to be set then it has to be conveyed in the general mass. For instance, media channels in television use public interactions for increasing the TRP and popularity of the channel among the ta rget customers. In Tucson, Forrest Carr of KGUN TV has broadcasted Viewers Bill of Rights that will increase the engagement of people (Hermida 661). Journalism is a concept that is created for the citizens of the countries of the world. The main purpose of journalism is to portray the realities of the societies to the people via media. However, it can be seen that in modern world, the purpose of journalism is exaggerated, but it can be controlled by the theoretical concepts explained in the two chapters of the book. The Mayo Clinic drives healthcare change by providing holistic and compassionate care to their patients by using education, research, patient-centered care and evidence-based practice. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the MCMC and how this model of care is a positive influence to healthcare. A professional practice model (PPM) is implemented in healthcare organizations to foster professional identity, job satisfaction, high quality nursing care, improved patient and family outcomes and communication (Mullen and Asher, 2007). The Mayo Clinic Model of Care is one PPM with a positive and influential reputation for healthcare. The MCMC sets high standards for their healthcare team and provides patients with optimal outcomes. The MCMC embraces two important core elements, patient and environment, to define their model. They sets themselves apart and influence other organizations by being an institute that provides quality patient care with compassion, trust and respect to every patient. We will write a custom essay sample on Practice Model or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page They encompass an environment of patience, research and education, quality not quantity, physician leadership and professional staff with expertise and devotion (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2002). The MCMC takes pride in employing professionals of high quality and providing them with an environment of research, learning and development. As healthcare changes, the MCMC adjusts by encouraging their staff to practice evidence-based practice. They do this through the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research (MCHS PBRN) whose mission is to ââ¬Å"solve the problems of health care practice to improve the health and health equity of patients and communities,â⬠(Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2013). Evidence based practice allows hospitals to provide the most up to date and clinically effective care possible. According to Huston, (2010) the ultimate goal of evidence based practice is ââ¬Å"to provide optimal patient care, with the goal of enhancing nursing practice and, in turn, improving patient or system outcomes. â⬠This is what the MCMC strives to accomplish every day with every patient. Influence of MCMC on Change in Health Care Healthcare is an ever-changing world. Facilities are continuously making changes and adjusting to technology, best practice and professional images. The MCMC influences change in healthcare systems by supporting education, research, evidence based practice and patient centered care. Mayo Clinic stays current on medical advances by having consultants travel around the world to teach and learn (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2002). This was also how the MCMC began. The Mayo Clinic is committed to education. They sustain that commitment through education programs: The Mayo Medical School, Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Graduate School, Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences and Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2002). The Mayo Clinic is supported by the highly skilled and educated staff that they employ. The positive outcomes and patient satisfaction that come from the Mayo Clinic has influenced other facilities to provide ongoing education for their staff, some requiring nurses with a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree as entry level, and provide their patients with the latest and best care. In 2011, the Mayo Clinic opened a healthcare delivery center that allows clinicians and researchers to evaluate best practices for a variety of healthcare services (Ford, 2011). With this center, they hope to conduct research and provide treatments that are more personal and specific to their patientââ¬â¢s diagnosis. Other facilities are beginning to rely more on research and evidence-based practice to provide their patients with individualized and personalized care. Sackett (as cited in Mason, Leavitt, and Chaffee, 2012) recognizes one of the most often cited definitions of evidence-based practice as ââ¬Å"the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of the current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. â⬠The MCMCââ¬â¢s primary focus is meeting the specific needs of the patient. The patient-centered care focus is also evolving in the health care industry and was actually developed as a model to the response of the national health care reform following the March 2010 passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Act (Berryman, Palmer, Kohl and Parham, 2013). This idea allows the patient to have more control over their care, be more involved in their care and the diagnostic tests they receive. This results in enhanced satisfaction and greater cost savings. MCMC wants to focus on the big picture and the entire healthcare journey which engages both the physician and the patient on the decision making. Summary The Mayo Clinic Model of Care has served as an influence and inspiration to the healthcare organization for many years. The care and patient satisfaction from the Mayo Clinic has historically been one of the best available. Many healthcare organizations follow the MCMC and reach for the reputation and quality that it poses. The MCMC takes pride in its organization and makes the patient top priority in every aspect. The care they receive is specific to their needs and is delivered by highly skilled, educated professionals. It begins with Guy simply trying to find shelter from the rain as they wait for a train. At the time he had no idea these were going to be some of the most pleasant conditions he would come across during his journey. Once we he was on the train he had no choice but to travel in an open boxcar and the rain turned into snow with a biting wind. When he finally reached Minsk conditions got much worse. He makes an account of one night when the mercury dropped to five degrees below zero, my hands and feet felt the cold so sharply that it sometimes seemed as if the pain were stabbing me in the heart, (24). However he did not realize that in Minsk it could actually get much worse, On that day the temperature fell to thirty-five degrees below zero, and I thought I would sure die. Nothing could warm us. We urinated into our numbed hands to warm them, and, hopefully to cauterize the gaping cracks in o ur fingers. Each movement of my fingers opened and closed deep crevices that oozed with blood. He said the pain was so great it made him sick to his stomach and he broke down into tears (37). When he did finally get to sleep it was always cold and on the floor, he would awake numb and stiff. He once had to hold a mans leg while it was being amputated and when it was finished he was holding the unattached leg in his hand. The soldiers were constantly underfed and were given rotten meat that sue to the cold was frozen by the time they went to eat it anyway. At one point during his time in Minsk Sajers toes, turned an ashen gray and he had to receive a painful injection to avoid amputation (62). At one point Sajer comments on one of the grisly aspects of battle, we felt as if we could smell the presence of death-and by this I dont mean the process of decomposition, but the smell that emanates from d... Examples of common professional ethics that cut across all professions include loyalty, transparency, integrity, honesty, among others. Some professionals such as medical practitioners have their own universal code of ethics which are observed world-wide by all the members of that profession. All medical doctors have to abide to the ââ¬ËHippocratic oathââ¬â¢, which is their universal form of professional ethics. Professional ethics are very important not only for the professionals but also for the members of the public. They place some responsibilities on members of a certain profession in line with the training and expectations of the society from the professions. For example, professional ethics of a police officer give him or her responsibility of maintaining law and order, preventing crime and ensuring the general wellbeing of the society. It would thus be against the professional ethics of a police officer if a crime is committed in his presence and the officer does not respond to the situation. On the contrary, an ordinary citizen or member of another profession who has no training in law enforcement will not be held responsible for being unable to stop a crime in progress as that is not his/her responsibility. Professional ethics also aid in ensuring optimum service delivery by members of a profession by maintaining discipline within the profession. For example, professional ethics expect members of a profession always to strive to deliver as per the main objectives of the profession without looking at monetary gain. This means that for one to be a member of a given profession, he or she must have a passion and will to serve the people as per what the society expects of them without looking at how much he/she will gain from doing so. For example, it is professional ethics that Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356808970409473646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5463093179562888510.post-10088609914589616762020-02-08T16:00:00.001-08:002020-02-08T16:00:03.329-08:00Operation management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words - 1Operation management - Essay Example The organisation implemented a philosophy and culture which they called The Corus Way in order to sustain competitiveness, productivity and profitability. Along with this philosophy is the practice of continuous improvement programmes across the company. Specifically, this paper explores the applicability of the Corus Way and Continuous Improvement Programmes in the Port Talbot Strip Products site. The site was experiencing lost, damaged and stolen equipments in their depot operations. The problem was investigated through a structured questionnaire where the results were collated, summarised and analysed. Using quality tools and techniques, this paper arrives at four recommendations for the improvement of the depot operations in accordance to the Corus Way. Corus Group is an international metals organization. The core competence of the company is providing steel and aluminium products and service to different market sectors. It is one of the top ten steel producers in the world. The customer base of Corus mostly comprises of businesses in the automotive, aerospace, packaging, engineering, building and construction markets. This paper is going to compare the similarities and differences between virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological ethics. It will include a description of the differences in how each theory addresses ethics and morality and it will also discuss an experience to explain the relationship between virtue, values, and moral concepts as they relate to one of the three theories. Differences In How These Theories Address Ethics and Morality Virtue ethics, deontological ethics, and utilitarianism are the three major approaches in normative ethics. Virtue ethics emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, while deontology emphasizes duties or rules, and utilitarianism emphasizes the consequences of actions. Virtue ethics is also called agent-based or character ethics. According to Boylan (2009), when using the virtue ethics approach, one should take the viewpoint that in living their life they should try to cultivate excellence in all that they do. It encourages people to develop their character as the basis for the good life. Utilitarianism is a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined by its outcome. Utilitarianism suggests that an action is morally right when that action produces more total utility for the group than any other alternative (Boylan, 2009). Deontological ethics judges the morality of an action based on the actions adherence to a rule or rules. This form of ethics uses rules and duties to determine what is ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠. Deontological ethics is opposed to consequentialism. Deontology maintains the wrongness of actions resides in the kind of action that it is, rather than the consequences it brings about. A deontologist, for example, would find the act of killing an innocent man wrong simply because it is the killing of an innocent man. A consequentialist might find this action wrong because it deprives someone of future happiness and causes grief to a family. Virtues, Values, and Moral Concepts For individuals who follow the deontology theory, they must apply obligations and rules to their personal conduct. An individuals obligation is to make sure they pay their bills. This helps them to support their family, which is an obligation to people who accept this kind of lifestyle. Some individuals accept not to follow this path in life. A person could easily look at an electric bill and throw it off to the side, and instead, take the money and gamble it away. This would not be the case for a deontologist. A deontologist follows their obligations. A person who follows the theory of a deontology also has to think about virtue, value, and moral concepts. There really is no way to separate the three, as they all play into the same hand. When confronted with a moral or ethical dilemma, virtue, value, and moral concepts all play a part in an individuals thinking process. Conclusion There are three major approaches in normative ethics: virtue ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology. All of these theories are used by mankind to determine what is ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠and what is ââ¬Å"wrongâ⬠. Whatever theory an individual accepts to use as their guide, it is important to accept one of these theories in an effort to help ourselves and mankind. References Boylan, M. (2009). All the experiences, values, and beliefs combined formulate the organizational culture of the company. A sick organizational culture can cause failure in a company. In a company with a healthy organizational culture employees work together to ensure the company reaches its goals. This paper will discuss the roles leadership and management play in a healthy organizational culture. How the four functions of management support and maintain a healthy organizational culture will also be addressed. In addition, strategies that leaders can use to promote a healthy culture will also be reviewed. Each company has a vision. A leader helps others to see the vision and inspire them to make the vision reality. Bateman and Snell (2007) assert that leadership is ineffective without a vision, employees or teams can establish a vision for jobs or an organization, and many people are more focused on carrying out his or her duties each day. Even some managers do not have a clear vision. When looking at an organizationââ¬â¢s culture, one sees the motivation given employees to achieve the organizationââ¬â¢s goals. One way a leader motivates employees is to lead by example. For example, if a leader states that company policy is company vehicles are not to be used for personal business, the same leader must also abide by the policy. When an employee observes a leader not following a company policy, the employee is less inclined to follow the policy. The telephone was the first tool of social media that gave people the chance to socialize and gather information. However, at the turn of twentieth century, online communication became popular among various groups of society. People began to get into virtual communication with the use of cellular phones and computers. Social networking became popular because it was a venue to draw people towards one another. This was also very universal and its popularity was not limited to a certain age group. Amazingly, social networking and social media ââ¬Å"become part of mainstream culture and the business worldâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Historyâ⬠). It was observed that social media became very valuable not only in socializing and information gathering but also in business where there has been greater dependence on the use of internet in promoting and marketing of products and/or services. Social media has provided the modern world with easy access to information, socialization and entertainment in the fastest way possible through the advancement of technology. Interestingly, the networks have become highly interactive and user-friendly that even a neophyte could easily learn to operate it in a short period of time. Social media has transformed into a powerful means of communication using numerous gadgets which have caught the interest of a larger number of people, the business practitioners take advantage of it to broaden the scope of their marketing. Truly, with the emergence of social media where people can communicate interactively with one another regardless of distance, business has been given a special place and opportunity to advertise or promote their business to a much bigger populace. Most authors have recognized the definition of social media provided by Wikipedia as the initial source of information about it. Gradually, different definitions have been formulated to increase peopleââ¬â¢s awareness of its definition. Safko and Brake mentioned that social media ââ¬Å"refers to activities, practices, and behaviors among communities of people who gather online to share information, knowledge, and opinions using conversational mediaâ⬠(2009: 6). On the other hand, Evans has an expanded definition of social media. He stated that ââ¬Å"Social media is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into content publishers. It is a ââ¬Å"shift from a broadcast mechanism to a many-to-many model, rooted in conversations between authors, people, and peersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (2008: 33). The author acknowledged various forms of communication utilized in social media such as ââ¬Å"internet forums, message boards, weblogs, wikis, podcasts, picture and videoâ⬠(2008: 33). Later on, it expanded to include ââ¬Å"blogs, picture-sharing, blogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, group creation and voice over IP. â⬠Social media has a vast potential as a channel through which promotional activities will be forwarded to its users. Social mediaââ¬â¢s unique features make it very usable and functional in marketing events. Evans stated that it is ââ¬Å"fundamentally different from traditional mediaâ⬠(2008: 33) known as newspaper, television, books, and radio. Social media is interactive media. This is one advantage of social media over traditional media. Other advantages include: (1) it has different social online channels, (2) it changes over time, and (3) it is participative. The power to influence the audience is what makes social media appealing to business practitioners. Social media is real. Existing right in front of the computer communicating genuinely in a personal way to the customer about a product is very advantageous for those who are using social media in marketing or in public relation campaign. Given the real nature of social media, event marketing has come to its new shape. At the same time, event marketing has begun to utilize the services of social media in marketing and promotion. Though at some point, they cater to similar interests; that is, individual interaction and the participation of people with the companyââ¬â¢s representatives. Pomer, on the issue of integrating event marketing and social media, described event marketing as a strategy ââ¬Å"which focuses on face-to-face interaction by attending, sponsoring and speaking at trade shows, industry meet-ups, etcâ⬠(par. ). Bowdin, Allen and Oââ¬â¢Toole described strategic event marketing as ââ¬Å"the process by which an event organization aligns business and marketing objectives and the environments in which they occur, with marketing activities that fulfill the needs of event consumersâ⬠(2006:184). Event marketing has come to its new shape through social media influence No one could deny how soci al media, being a vehicle of information and communication, has transformed event marketing into a more meaningful and highly strategic promotional activity. In Bulmerââ¬â¢s article on the impact of social media on business, he stated that the trend today is to ââ¬Å"build a network or use social media to deepen customer intimacyâ⬠(par. 1). Social media has been used these days without acknowledging this fact as Bulmer put it. He emphasized that, the ability of social media to ââ¬Å"change behavior â⬠¦ and â⬠¦ to impact a professionalââ¬â¢s decision-making processesâ⬠is the real essence of success in using this in business. Practically, social mediaââ¬â¢s approach in dealing with the audience in a genuine and an interactive manner somehow influences the approaches of event management to its customers. Event marketing management therefore becomes livelier, customer-oriented, interactive, personal, and dependent on audience feedback. There are several reasons for this. First, admittedly, as Shone and Parry pointed out that ââ¬Å"human society is complex and interactiveâ⬠(2004: 50). It means that regardless of culture, different societies celebrate in diverse ways, from the ancient period to the modern times, from a traditional way to a technological way; it makes no difference as long as events involve people and celebration or activities. Shaping event management following the principles behind social media will help draw a lot of people to the message because there is interaction and exchange of communication. Secondly, various events such as festivities, wedding, etc. serve to ââ¬Å"strengthen social bonds as well as to spread enjoyment aroundâ⬠(Shone & Parry, 2004: 51). Peopleââ¬â¢s primary intention for celebrating events publicly is to satisfy their longing for socialization and enjoyment. Thus, involving the community in events in such a way that they express inner satisfaction for socialization and enjoyment can make events management very successful. Shone and Parry stressed that without the ââ¬Å"social contact that event often give, the feeling of isolation in societyâ⬠¦ can be greatâ⬠(2004: 51). Hence, event management must be in the context of the communityââ¬â¢s perception of event celebration which is socialization and enjoyment. Given this, certain changes have been observed in conducting event marketing. Borges noted how businesses nowadays acknowledge social media as an ââ¬Å"effective mechanism for reaching a target marketâ⬠(2009: 57). He even emphasized that ââ¬Å"myopic attitudeâ⬠that a business executive has on social media will eventually lead him to lose the business. Moreover, a business executive having event marketing founded on social media will ultimately be ââ¬Å"transparent, forthcoming, honest, sincere, and also to contribute something of worthâ⬠(Borges, 2009: 63). Since the events for the purpose of marketing require a group of community participation, the activities involved have had considerable improvement in terms of acceptable approaches in dealing with the community. The companyââ¬â¢s marketing arm learns to be transparent, forthcoming, honest and sincere in everything they present before their audience. It is different from traditional marketing wherein its objective is purely making people buy or patronize a product using various ways to manipulate their decision-making. Hence, marketing an event for a product, presents live and active interaction and participation from the community online or offline. Event marketing management facilitates Social Media Marketing The great global financial crisis has brought to the mind of marketing managers the idea of utilizing social media in their promotional activities. The Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Youtube, and many other social networking channels have been utilized for the purpose of marketing. The good news for marketing managers is that it is free. From the research findings presented by Bulmer in his article, he mentioned several impacts that social media has on business which helped transform event marketing to social media marketing. With such, he recognized the following findings: (1) decision making in the business world today is more social; (2) many professionals are using social networking sites particularly Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter; (3) many decisions have been drawn from information gathered through active users of social media; (4) many professionals trust the information they gather from the sites; (5) social media users have significantly increased in three years; and (6) many professionals collaborate well outside preferably using social media sites than within the organizational intranet (Bulmer). Hence, there is widespread recognition of the impact of social networking in business from the business worldââ¬â¢s perspective. The growing business community participation in the online world proves the fact that ââ¬Å"When you join a group online, you are joining a communityâ⬠(Borges, 2009: 63). Social media started to become popular among groups of people for personal use primarily for communication purposes. Eventually, this became a good tool to interact, send greetings, and share information to friends. Most importantly, it had become a powerful instrument recognized to support the marketing arm of any business. Through social media, the way people do the business has transformed into ââ¬Ësocial salesââ¬â¢ because people believe in the power of online communication in mobilizing sales teams by building good relationship with customers. Shih recognized that social network marketing talks about the ââ¬Å"breakthrough new marketing techniques made possible by online social networksâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (2009: 6). Some of these that she mentioned are: hypertargeting, enhanced ability to capture passive interest and conduct rapid testing and iteration on campaigns, social community engagement, and automated word-of-mouth marketing (Shih, 2009: 6). Furthermore, Tobin and Braziel emphasized that social media marketing plan is ââ¬Å"based on engagement not trafficâ⬠(2008: 79) which means that this type of marketing focuses on ââ¬Å"web eventsâ⬠or the interactions users have with features which could be in form of blogs, comments, post, video views, and many others. Importance of social media in marketing event Availing the use of social media for marketing purposes has a lot to offer to a business. Borges mentioned several benefits of social media aside from the fact that larger potential buyers who are receptive to new information and trend can be met through social network sites. Some of the benefits named are: low cost, brand building, staffing advantages, loyalty, level playing field, building trust, convergence of PR and social media for viral marketing, positive SEO benefits, quantifiable metrics, and educational (2008: 131-140). In terms of costs, social media requires a low budget which is almost free, for a service that values relationships. Brands are being built through a good content using the internet platform. Thus, it is simpler and appealing to consumers. Few, yet highly talented staff, who can work in an enjoyable work environment are needed when using social media because content is more important here. Using social media builds loyalty among internet users because of its being user-friendly. This is impossible to establish using advertisements and other promotional activities. Besides, all types of people can make use of it like anyone else regardless of economic or social status. Likewise, through a sincere voice in the content, the company can easily acquire trust from the people. In effect, social media as a PR tool can be an integral part of marketing activities. Furthermore, links attached to marketing in social media creates a bridge connecting to the companyââ¬â¢s website thus increasing the chance of the customer browsing of the webpage. Learning is considered as one of the benefits of social media. Not only do the internet users learn but companies also learn. Armed with this information, social media has evolved from purely socialization and enjoyment to something highly beneficial to businesses. For this reason, there is no doubt for business executives to resort to using social media in one of the tools in marketing an event. Conclusionà Social media has begun existing without clear importance rather than for socialization and personal or group enjoyment. However, with the increasing popularity of social networking when the internet was introduced to the public in 1990, this form of social interaction gained remarkable importance not only among the general public but also among business groups locally and internationally. Indeed, the ability of the social media to satisfy the users with its personalized features, has led to the discovery that it could be a potential instrument in shaping the mind of the audience. Social media has unique characteristics. It can change perception, it is very appealing, and it is effective in marketing an event. However, any business executive who wants to use its service must understand how it serves the public. Colonial Super Powers: From its birth in early 15th century to its decline in dominance by the 20th century, Colonial Super Powers fueled/sustained empires across oceans. Territories such as Portugal, France, Spain and Great Britain fought incessantly at times for various countries and islands across the world. The largest of all, the Superpowers during that Era, was Great Britain; considered as the Giant Empires with the largest number of colonized countries under its control. These Countries gained their enormous wealth and power from the many countries they claimed as colonies. Initially France was the first Colonial Superpower to claim Dominica. However, there were constant battles between the French and the British to earn full possession of the country. Britain subsequently earned Dominica as one of its Territories (1763-1978).Dominica later gained its independence. However, most of their traditions and cultures emulate the French and British. IS A.I. POSSIBLE? In the science fiction film, The Terminator directed by James Cameron, the computers in the movie get smart and rise up against their human masters. In other words, the computers in the movie were able to become independent of their programmers and developed a kind of artificial intelligence (A.I.). This essay will prove that in real life, computers will never realize artificial intelligence, and also even though functionalism is based on an analogy between humans and computers, it is an effective way to describe the interaction between the mind and body. Two essays will be evaluated in this essay. The first essay was called; Can Computers Think? by John Searle whichâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The functionalist theory deflated the importance of the interaction; the mind of the program interacts at one constant level with the brain. Fodor explained the relationship between the mind and the body as a: subtle dualism of absent function (software) and its realization (hardware). Functionalism is also much less rigid a theory when compared to behaviorism. Behaviorism is the theory that all states of mind could be explained by observing a persons behavior, and that a persons mind is just a bunch of psychological dispositions. The problem with behaviorism is demonstrated by Rodins Le Penseur. The problem was, if there was no behavior then the mental states could not be described. Materialism is defined by William Lyons as a view that à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦everything mental is totally inside the head. Materialism is similar to functionalism although, materialism says nothing about the relationship between the mind and the body. Searle did not support the idea that idea that the brain could be represented by a digital computer, or that The implementation of an appropriate computer program is sufficient for thinking. Searle based his argument against strong A.I. by saying that computers can only manipulate symbols, and can not understand them. Therefore, computer instructions are only syntactic and not semantic. This trend has occurred over a relatively short period of time; in the United States, it appears to have begun in the last quarter of the 20th century. The epidemic in children followed shortly thereafter. The most recent data (19992000) from national surveys in the United States suggest that almost two thirds of the adult population is overweight, and almost one third is obese (Flegal et.al, pp. 1724). In children, current estimates (19992000) put the prevalence of overweight at 15%, a threefold increase over the past 30 years (Ogden et.al, pp. 1729). Although this epidemic has spared no subgroup of the population and has been documented in individuals of all ages and racial/ethnic and socioeconomic subgroups, the problem is greatest in minority populations and among persons living in poverty. Obesity is a global public health problem, affecting virtually every region of the world with the excep tion of sub-Saharan Africa. Discussion Identification The World Health Organization (2000) defines obesity as a condition of abnormal or excess accumulation of adipose tissue (body fat) to an extent that an individual's health may be impaired. Because the precise measurement of adipose tissue requires invasive laboratory measures, in the population context, a simpler measure on which to base an obesity definition is required. Although imperfect, the Body Mass Index (BMI), defined as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared, has been adopted by consensus in the United States by the National Institutes of Health (1998) and the Centers; for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and internationally by WHO (2000). Consensus definitions of overweight and obesity have been set at 25 (overweight) and 30 (obesity), with severity classes of obesity defined as follows: overweight, 25.0 to 29.9; Class I obesity, 30.0 to 34.9; Class II obesity, 35.0 to 39.9; and Class III obesity, 40.0+. The WHO (2000) terminology differs slightly, but the cutoff points are the same. In growing children, in whom weight and height are both changing (and at different rates), the definition of obesity is inherently more complicated. Although no universally agreed on standard exists for assessing overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, there is a growing consensus that BMI should be adopted as an indirect measure of adiposity for children and adolescents, as well (Barlow Dietz, pp. 223). Because BMI varies substantially by age and gender during childhood and adolescence, the specific BMI cutoffs used to classify obesity must be gender- and age-specific and must be referenced against a standard. In the United States, the standard used is the CDC Revised Growth Reference (Barlow Dietz, pp. 228). Internationally, several standards (Cole et.al, pp. 27; Ogden et al., pp. 1728), including one based on a pooled international sample (Cole et.al, pp. 1241), are also in use. Several periods in development have been proposed as critical periods in the development of persistent obesity and its comorbid consequences. These include the prenatal period (when intrauterine exposures may influence adiposity), early childhood, and adolescence. Some evidence suggests that breast-feeding may protect against later obesity. Likelihood of persistence in adulthood of obesity from childhood is related both to age at onset and severity. Sequelae Childhood obesity has a number of immediate, intermediate, and long-term health consequences (Must Strauss, pp. S3). These include classic cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure, abnormal blood lipid levels, and impaired glucose tolerance. Respiratory conditions include sleep-disordered breathing. In addition, early menarche and menstrual abnormalities are linked to overweight. Of particular concern is the emergence of type 2 diabetes, once considered an adult-onset disease, as a disease of childhood. The psychological impact may represent one of the most damaging effects of obesity given that stigmatization and social isolation may result in lower self-esteem and depression. In a recently replicated classic study, children were asked to rank order a series of drawings of children with various handicaps (crutches, wheelchair, missing a hand, facial disfigurement, obesity) based on which child they would like best (Latnerm Stunkard, pp. 456). The obese child was ra nked last irrespective of the ranking child's sex, race, socioeconomic status, living environment, and own disability. In another study, ratings of quality of life for children with obesity were similar to those of children undergoing chemotherapy for cancer (Schwimmer et.al, 2003, pp. 1814). Although obesity in adulthood that has been present from childhood may carry an additional burden due to increased severity, much adult obesity arises through adult weight gain. The health consequences of obesity present in adulthood are enormous, both in magnitude and impact on quality of life. In developing its clinical guidelines, the NIH report identified an extensive list of health conditions for which obesity increased risk. These include hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, many cancers, and depression. The number of deaths per year in the United States attributable to obesity has been estimated at about 300,000. Risk Factors In all persons, child or adult, obesity arises due to energy imbalance: When energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, most of the excess calories are stored as adipose tissue. To give rise to obesity, energy imbalance must occur over a long period of time and likely reflects a combination of factors. Individual behaviors, environmental factors, and heredity, singly and in combination, contribute to the development of obesity. The rapidity with which the obesity epidemic emerged rules out simple genetic explanations. The current environment in the United States has been characterized as obesogenic, meaning that it promotes high energy intakes and low energy expendituresthe energy imbalance that gives rise to weight gain. Modern industrialized societies provide abundant, relatively inexpensive food; modern life is organized to reduce energy expenditure at work and at home, through technology and urbanization. For a species that evolved to store fat in times of plenty in order to survi ve in leaner times, many individuals are genetically susceptible to gain weight in the current environment. Excessive energy intake is a primary risk factor for the development of childhood and adult obesity, although the specific aspects of intake responsible are controversial. Dietary factors, such as diet composition, energy density, fat intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, snacks, sugar-rich foods, and soft drinks, have all been identified in association with obesity. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables can help reduce the intake of dietary fat and calories because they are naturally low in fat and energy density compared with other foods. Despite current recommendations that individuals over the age of 2 years consume 2 to 4 servings of fruits and 3 to 5 servings of vegetables daily, children and adolescents eat an average of only 3.6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and fried potatoes account for a large proportion of those servings. A number of other dietary variables, including soft drinks, snacking, portion sizes, and infant feeding have also been linked t o childhood obesity. Studies suggest that the increased consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks, snack foods (which are often high in fat or/and sugar), and large-sized portions of foods have contributed to the increase in energy intakes. Reduced physical activity may be the most important factor in explaining the increase of obesity over the past two decades. Physical activity among U.S. youth is in decline, with nearly half of young people aged 12 to 21 reporting that they do not engage in vigorous physical activity regularly and one fourth reporting no vigorous physical activity. Whereas leisure time physical activity has increased in men and remained constant in women over the past four decades in the United States, activity associated with work and home life has declined over the same period. Sedentary behavior and inactivity, such as watching television and playing video/computer games, also are contributory factors. Gortmaker et al. (1996) reported an adjusted-odds ratio (OR) for obesity of 8.3 for adolescents who watched TV more than 5 hours per day compared with those who watched 0 to 2 hours. Compelling evidence comes from intervention studies, which show that reducing TV viewing time can help prevent childh ood obesity. Adults in a trial of maintenance following weight loss sustained their losses best when physical activity was high and television viewing was low (van Baak et.al, pp. 210). TV watching may promote obesity by reducing physical activity, lowering metabolic rate, and increasing energy intake. The latter may occur due to the fact that TV viewing may be associated with snacking and may moderate eating habits generally through greater exposure to advertising of foods high in added sugars and fat or by conveying mixed messages about lifestyle and health in the content of advertisements. TV viewing is a major source of inactivity among Americans. Screen time, a summary measure of time spent viewing television and videos and engaged in computer-based activity, represents the largest proportion of nonsleep, nonschool time for youth. Conclusion Obesity has emerged as the major nutritional problem facing the pediatric and adult populations worldwide. The etiology of obesity is multifactorial and includes individual risk factors, genetic influences, and environmental effectors. The severity of the problem, in terms of immediate and long-term health consequences to physical and psychological health, suggests it is a problem that will dominate the public health agenda in the 21st century. Civilization is defined as ?the peoples considered to have reached a high social development?. This essay will discuss the relationship between both freedom and civilization, by showing how a increase in one will lead to a decrease in the other and vice versa. With a civilization comes a decline in freedom due to religious and government made laws that restrict certain doings and beliefs. For a group of people to be considered Civilized they have to have ?Complex Institutions? one of those being Religion. With a religion comes beliefs and rules to follow that a man must take in if he wants to follow that religion. In these beliefs alone there is probably 100 different things alone that a man can't think. That alone restricts his freedom. Along with these things a man can't think, there is probably 1,000 actions or doings he can't perform without breaking his beliefs. So civilizations just with religious laws alone would almost destroy a mans freedom. But without religion no culture of people would be considered civilized. So just with the religion inside of a civilization, a man's freedom is taken from him. But in most civilizations there is more than just religious laws there is also government or man made laws (But these laws are also said to be the word of the gods but there is no proof of this) Imagine a civilization where there is no thought of a higher being or any type of religion. Of course there wouldn't be any religious laws then but there would be government made laws to help keep order amongst the people. Freedom is again defined as being able to act freely (Thus meaning no rules, laws or restrictions can be put on the people about beliefs, actions.). Some call the U.S. the ?Land of the Free? but how can we consider ourselves to be free with all the laws that limit our actions in public and in our own homes. But if we had no laws chaos would reign and with that how could we consider ourselves to be civilized. People would do whatever they pleased this including killing, raping, stealing, etc. So calling ourselves free is the last thing we should do considering all the thousands of laws we have here in the great old USA. So far this essay has only showed two different attributes of any civilization, religion and government. But most early civilizations are very diffe rent from how things are now. Today in no way are religion and government related at all except for the religious beliefs of the people in the government. In early civilizations the whole government was controlled by religion. In these early civilizations the government could control the people to make them do or think whatever the government wanted. They did this with food surplus. Not only did the government decide how much you were taxed but also how much of the food surplus is given to you. So if you didn't believe in what the government wanted you to or if they thought of you as threat the society (threat meaning that you would impose your newly founded beliefs on to the followers of the government). You would probably be killed or starved or the government would tell the rest of the people you were crazy and they'd probably make an example of you to show the others to never go against the government. So in these early civilizations the government or the men inside of it controlled all, they really tried to almost become the gods. These men could give or take lives and do whatever they really wanted and they could justify it with religion. So in these early civilizations that were controlled by religi on, as the civilization grew the freedom of its people decreased until was inevitably demolished. They had no freedom they were almost like slaves of the government or the ?priests? that would claim to have talked to the almighty. The worst part of it all was that they could justify this by claiming it had to do with the words Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356808970409473646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5463093179562888510.post-2512538464722481032019-11-24T10:13:00.001-08:002019-11-24T10:13:02.090-08:00Structural Design of a Building EssaysStructural Design of a Building Essays Structural Design of a Building Essay Structural Design of a Building Essay have always been attractive characteristics to consultants and developers. In todayââ¬â¢s fast tracked construction projects where time and schedule are of essence, these qualities become decisive in choosing the type of structure to be built. At present, Structural Steel Works, Inc. offers all of the advantages of steel as a building material at the most competitive price without sacrificing quality control. Advantages of using steel:- Superior Strength and durability. Precise measurements, perfect angles. Resistant to pest. Great protection against the worst weather conditions. Steel Components mean minimal material waste. Installation is fast and simple. Labour costs are minimal. Steel is recyclable. A cost Effective material. Structural steel building CONCRETE Reinforced concrete can be strengthened by using a number of different methods, such as -: reinforcement bars reinforcement grids reinforcement plates reinforcement fibers Concrete is very strong in compression but not in tension so these materials are there to help strengthen the concrete in tension. The term Ferro Concrete refers only to concrete that is reinforced with iron or steel. Other materials used to reinforce concrete can be organic and inorganic fibers as well as composites in different forms. The most common method of strengthening concrete is to use reinforcement bars. For a strong, ductile and durable construction the reinforcement should have the following properties: High strength High tensile strain Good bond to the concrete Thermal compatibility Durability in the concrete environment Advantages of using precast concrete:- Column-Free Long Spans With fewer columns and more usable floor space, precast, prestressed concrete provides greater freedom for space utilization. Conserves Energy Prestressed concrete components can improve the thermal storage potential of a building. It effectively conserves energy required for heating and cooling. Maintenance Free Precast concrete does not require painting and is free from corrosion. Its durability extends building life. Resists Fire Durability and fire resistance mean low insurance premiums and greater pers onnel safety. Those who investigate life cycle costing will appreciate the precast concretes excellent fire resistance characteristics. Rapid Construction precast concrete construction gets the job done sooner. The manufacturing of prestressed members and site preparation can proceed simultaneously. Early occupancy provides obvious benefits to the client. Versatility of Design Precast concrete buildings are not only functional but beautiful as well. Numerous panel configuration design possibilities are available. Structural concrete building As raw material prices differ, so does building design. During times of lower steel prices, more steel and less concrete is used, and vice versa, but both materials are typically used together. Concrete without steel reinforcement crumbles under tensile loads. Steel on its own, without composite or reinforced concrete floors, is likewise not a preferred building method. While rebar is almost always steel, it is not considered structural steel and is described separately in the rebar and reinforced concrete articles. While both steel structures and Reinforced concrete cement(R. C. C)structures have their pros and cons, the steel structures have better strength to weight ratio than RCC, and can be easily dismantled(Steel structures, which have bolted connections can also be reused to some extent after dismantling). First is the fact that many firms, especially in Europe, have retained many of their employees as part-time employees rather than retrenching them. As growth continues, these part-time employees will be brought back to full time status first. New jobs will not begin to be created until the economic growth outpaces the rising productivity caused by turning part-time employees back into full time employees. A second reason the recovery could be viewed as a ââ¬Å"joblessâ⬠one is the historical precedent set by the recovery from the 1991 recession. What economists found is that the economic recovery was slowed because jobs lagged behind other sectors of the economy. For example, consumer spending will not increase at a rapid rate if unemployment remains high. This drag on the economy works as a negative feedback. Few new jobs mean less growth, which means new job growth, is stymied. As a HR professional, offering insight into the job market is a key part of your professional responsibilities. Feedback from HR professionals actually predicted this most recent downturn in the economy. HR professionals release a report called the Leading Indicators of National Employment (LINE). In December of 2007, the LINE report indicated that the national employment indicators had turned into negative territory. A year later the National Bureau of Economic Statistics confirmed that December of 2007 was the start of the recession. One troubling labor market report being gathered by HR professionals deals with wage trends. Due to the high rate of unemployment, many HR professionals feel that wages will begin to trend lower, even as the broader economy recovers. This could lead to a lost generation of young employees being stuck in low wage jobs with little prospects for breaking out. Other possible ways firms or individuals may compensate for lower wages is by increasing the amount of telecommuting. To answer this question, the research questions posed were as follows: 1. How does the lower-income buyer view their consumption habits in relation to government, politics, or corporate employment? 2. What role, if any, does television usage (volume and content) dictate lower-income buyer preferences and consumption behaviours? 3. In relation specifically to food, how do food insecure individuals view the food products they purchase in relation to needs or environment? 4. What is most important to the lower-income buyer- peer opinion or price sensitivity and to which types of products does either/or apply? In other words, this sociological research project is expected not only to draw a relationship between income, consumption and lifestyle but also to determine how the lower class of society respond to the jobs provided to them in terms of daily living, purchasing and consumption activities. Obviously the highly relevant factors of media advertising and peer group recommendations had to be included as these factors cannot be ignored in the consideration of modern lifestyle choices- no matter what strata of society we are dealing with in a typical Western economy. The methodology involves first of all the creation of a Food Log, followed by a multi-purpose Survey covering the purchasing habits of the lower class families in selected areas. The multipurpose survey will have three distinct sections- one about general consumption behaviours, the second about the influence of television and peers on decision-making, and the third about any physiological restrictions that each participant maintains in their lifestyle. These surveys were distributed by the researcher in an environment where low-income shoppers frequented in the region, while guaranteeing anonymity to the participants. However the expected sample to be collected was 50-100 individuals of varying demographics and socio-cultural backgrounds to gain a broader perspective of what drives product consumption as it relates to their social inequality as compared to other more resourceful consumers. The data gathered from the study was then analysed and correlated Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12356808970409473646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5463093179562888510.post-28381519159218327792019-11-17T23:18:00.001-08:002019-11-17T23:18:02.930-08:00Reconstruction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 wordsReconstruction - Essay Example The rise was initiated by various factors that included social, economic, legal, and political. The big business era was a source of wealth and capitalization for many Americans most of who were involved in various national corporations that controlled markets (Wilson 214). Sufficient resources such as oil, coal, and iron were foundations for the building of the states after the war. Adequate iron led to the production of iron and steel that were part of inputs in the big businesses. Steel was used to make railroads and cars that were used in the transportation of various products ranging from coal, ores, and agricultural produce from a state to another (Symonds). Oil was a precious good after its discovery, which was used in homes and to power machinery in some of the industries. Coal powered factories were efficient compared to water-powered; hence, the discovery of coal-fueled the increase of steel mills in the U.S. There was a rise in the number of immigrants to Southern States that provided a foundation for investors, investors, and labor. The immigrants worked in the big businesses and agricultural sector; hence, providing cheap labor. The high population required enhanced transportation methods leading to the increase in railroad networks. The increased demand led to a change in the social life of some of the citizens due to enhanced wealth sources. The banks offered loans that were sources of investment capital. Investors in the big businesses would seek assistance from banks to set up steel mills and railroads as part of the reconstruction. Stock markets were used by trusts such as Rockefellerââ¬â¢s to trade shares and purchase other corporations. The Federal Government did not regulate the operations and establishment of businesses. They were free to pool and set cartels that would increase competition opportunities. Bailey and Savage (1994) said that speaking in second language has often been viewed as that most demanding of the four skills. Speaking skill is the second skill: (1) listening (2) speaking (3) reading (4) writing. Speaking conveys thought, understanding and feeling to listeners. Moreover, it can help listener understands objectives of speaker. Thus, speaking skill is important for communication in every day life. Second language learning, speaking skill is necessary because a person who can speak able to understand other. Also, it helps reading and writing skill to be easy. However, this skill is the complicate skill that speaker has to practice for long time. It does not occur to understanding or remembrance. So, Roger Scott (1981) purposes the steps of teaching and activities as below: Informing objectives teacher should tell learners what do we learn. Presentation teacher should present contents with context. Teacher does not present without context because some contexts are different in another context. Practising and conveying learners will practice suddenly after teacher present contents. Teacher should provide a variety of expressions and native speaker accent. Teacher also encourages learner to learn freely and similar real situations. Moreover, Mary Finocchiaro and Christopher Brumfit (1983) explained that there are many activities for speaking teaching that teachers can choose appropriately an activity for students in each level as below: Answering questions that teachers or friends ask. Telling friends to act with order. Letting students ask or answer friends questions related to classroom or outside experiences. Telling characters of objects from the pictures. Telling experiences by providing key words. Reporting stories from assigned topics. Setting classroom as scenes of some situations like restaurant, bank, and grocery. Debating, discussing, and expressing your ideas. Playing language games. Practising to telephone. Reading Thai newspapers and reporting in English Role playing. Speaking is divided into two main areas which are monologue and dialogue. Monologue is a person who speaks without interaction with other people (one person show) such as speech. Another one is dialogue that has at least 2 people talking together such as conversation. Moreover, people have to know some important means (managing interaction) to speak such as openings and closings, responding appropriately in fixed routine, taking turns, and topic management. There are several activities for developing speaking skills. Discussion Discussion is probably the most used activity in the oral skill class. Learners are assigned to discuss about provided topic. This activity usually does in a group because discussion is an activity for sharing information and knowledge to each other. Furthermore, learners are necessary to take the prior knowledge for discussion. For example, the topic is Living together before marriage. The learners should find some evidences to support your ideas. The evidence is maybe findings of research, statistic, or real experience. Besides, learners have to realize the managing interaction as above. The first step is teacher have to do a warm-up activity to introduce in the topic by discussing in the similar topic. This activity will add some ideas for students. The discussion does not have right or wrong, but it is sharing your own thoughts and feeling to each other. There are how to succeed with discussion: Give students topical information and language forms in order that they have something to say with other people. Let student purpose discussion topic or choose from some options. The topic of discussion is not necessary to be serious topic. Students would like to be motivated if the topic is interesting. Set objectives before discussion, and learners should achieve the goals. Use small group instead of whole class discussion because a small group is easy to participant in. Let students discuss for 8 -10 minutes. Teacher should stop them if they have nothing to say. Give feedback after finishing discussion. Students will know your ability by teachers feedback. For example: Pair work. Look at these rules for dating. Which statements do you agree with? Why? The man should always pay for the date. Some things should never change. A woman should never approach a man first. She should always be the one whos invited. It is inadvisable to talk about your problems at the beginning of a relationship. Do not say things like Can I see you again tomorrow? Play it cool. Do not make it appear that you are desperate. To avoid awkward situations, let your family know where you are going and when you will be back. It is better to go out with groups of friends in the beginning. Most blind dates tend to be disastrous, so it is best to avoid them. It is indiscreet to ask personal questions until you get to know each other. B. Group work. What are the most important dating rules in your culture? Agree on five important rules, and then tell the class. It is best for young people to go out in groups. Two people should never go out on their own unless they are planning to get married. Role play It is an activity for developing speaking skill, and students can show your ability about performance. Students usually are assigned some roles and fit into some situations that students maybe face outside classroom. Role play activity is advantage for practicing and developing sociolinguistic competence that they have to speak English with appropriateness according to situations and characters. Students always enjoy playing, but some are not because they are lack of self confidence. To succeed role play should do: Introduce activity by explaining the situation and make sure that students understand their own character. Set objectives before discussion, and learners should achieve the goals. Give a card that explains the person or role to students. The card maybe composes of words, expressions, or sentences. Have students brainstorm in their group for planning. Use small group instead of whole class discussion because a small group is easy to participant in. Let students work at their own ability level because students have different individual language skill. Teacher does not expect that everybody has to produce equally to discussion. Give feedback after finishing discussion. Students will know your ability by teachers feedback. For example: Choose the situation 1 or 2 to make up a dialogue and demonstrate the play in the classroom. Situation 1 Students A : You are going to join the live concert of your favorite singer or band, but you do not want to go alone. So, you need to invite your friend and tell his or her what do/does he/she/they look(s) like? Students B: You do not know his or her favorite singer or band for making decision. Situation 2 Students A: You are robbed the golden necklace. However, you are so lucky, you can remember his character. You need to describe him to a police. Students B: You are a police man. You need to ask his/her what is happening and what is the robber looks like? Information Gap The information gap activity involves each learner in a pair or group possessing information which the other learners do not have. The information of learners has to be shared with other in order to reach the objectives and outcomes. Doughty and Pica (1986) suggest that if students work in pairs with an activity that to be required exchanging information, students would engage in more negotiation of meaning that with activity. The information gap activities have their own advantages and limitations. They help language acquisition, but they do not involve students in conversational strategies in the same way like role play and discussion. For example: There are many different activities for developing speaking skills. The most important thing to realize is communicative competence including linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse, and strategic competence. Moreover, speakers need to speak with fluency and accuracy. As you can see that speaking need more abilities to be mixed together. Recently, there are many foreigners wives at Udon Thaini province. Speaking is mostly used to communicate with other people. While a good speaker needs those things as above, some are not. For example, a foreigners wife at the department store says Honey, it the same at house. with pointing to a bag of detergent which is namely Breeze. This sentence is not correctly, but her husband can understand what she means. She speaks with some competence which is strategic competence that she speaks and point to something she means. Although she produces a sentence with any knowledge, she is able to communicate. Furthermore, there are not only utterances but also body language and eye contacts that you should act while you are speaking. The important activity for developing speaking skill in terms of body language and eye contacts is presentation, especially public speaking. For instance, when I was a fourth year student at Khon Kaen University, I usually practice presentation skill. Every subject need to oral presentation. I think that I was given many opportunities for practice until I can present confidently in front of classroom or anywhere. I also realize that dressing can help me to be a believable person. Although sometimes I am not sure for information that I have to present, I try to produce with confidence and good looking. After I finish presentation, my friend told me that You speak with reliability Then I answered that But I have no substances, ha ha. It makes me aware that speaking is the most important skill in every day life. Also, body language or gestures and eye contacts are choices to convey meaning to the audiences. If you are a good speaker, you should always practice anytime. For the second language learners, you cannot to be a perfect speaker because second language is not mother tongue, but you can speak with a few mistakes. Besides, you can speak English similar to native speakers by more practicing. For another example, I have a speech examination in terms of introduction of guest speaker which is the promptu speech. The teacher assigned since at the beginning of December. I have many times for preparation, but I still speak with some incorrect point. I also think that I cannot speak every word I prepared, but I can convey meaning to audience that it still has the same meaning. After that, it is the time for impromptu speech. Everyone has to pick a piece of paper that wrote a topic, and I was let a minute to prepare. Suddenly, I produce about the topic I selected. Luckily, I got a quite easy topic which is What custom in your country is different from customs in other countries? That top ic is in the Thai context while some are not related to Thai people. I realize that a speaker is needed to have omniscience for any topics. Person who has wider knowledge will get more advantages in speaking. In addition, experiences are considered to be necessity, especially direct experiences. As I mentioned as above, there are several activities for developing speaking skill in different ways. Teacher should select the appropriate activities for your students. Recently, communicative approach is taught widely in second language learning. This approach focuses on the ability to communicate in the real situation or authentic events, but the teacher should not ignore to teach grammar for them that is a heart of English learning. Moreover, I believe that vocabularies are necessary in speaking skill. Also, teacher should encourage developing vocabulary skill at the same time.
